Our conversations in this episode illustrate very well how we react to "knowledge" in any form, once the mind attaches, we respond. We break down the mental modifications specified in each of Sutras I, 7-11 and try to relate personally to them through experience. As an added note to the conversation about the difference between sleep and Samadhi: Iyengar's translation states that "Sleep is the non-deliberate absence of thought"- emphasis on the word non-deliberate. Samadhi is the deliberate stilling of thought processes in order to achieve undiluted awareness.

In this episode we had a short recap of our experiences with the Sutras thus far and what we've come to realize through them, up to and including Sutras I, 5&6. We related individually both pleasureable and painful experiences and our perception of their effects on us. We digressed into a short debate on the nature of "truth" (but, then, don't most good philosophical discussions go there eventually?) and how ego-centric ideas of what is true tend to be exclusive and limiting. A very lively discussion all in all, with all that and more....

In this episode we introduce Sutras I 5&6 which tell us about how the fluctuations of the mind manifest to us and the 5 specific forms that they take. We explore the relationship of pain to pleasure, of finding "middle ground" between the two extremes and the role that discrimination and awareness play in this process and much more. In this episode we introduce Sutras I. 3&4 and discussed them conceptually. We discussed how mind, sensory perceptions and past and present impressions form our sense of self. We also explored how we perceive reality through our "filter of consciousness" and postulated why that filter exists. We also broke down the three components of consciousness in more detail.
